The Gourmand's Lemon. A Collection of Stories and Recipes
When life gives you lemons…
A culinary journey through art, film, literature and cooking.
The deceptively simple lemon takes centre stage in the second volume of TASCHEN's collaboration with The Gourmand, masters of the crossover between food and art. A star of Renaissance gardens, a Medici-dynasty currency, a remedy for scurvy, a factor in the making of the mafia and invisible ink for secret messages since the year 600: these cheerful yellow orbs are loaded with intrigue.
The book traces the fruit's astonishing genealogy, explores its role as a literary device in Joan Didion, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Tom Wolfe and James Joyce, and examines how the lemonade stand came to represent the American dream. A favourite subject of the greats, the lemon captivates in the still lifes of the old masters and inspires Picasso, Matisse and Warhol. It also reaches into design with Philippe Starck's iconic Juicy Salif juicer, and into the decorative arts, from Arts and Crafts wallpapers to mythological ceramics.
These stories are accompanied by a foreword from chef and writer Simon Hopkinson, an introduction from art critic Jennifer Higgie and more than 60 recipes from kitchens around the world for every occasion: poultry, silky sauces, classic cocktails and indulgent desserts, with original photography by Bobby Doherty.
The authors: The Gourmand is David Lane and Marina Tweed, founders of the food and culture magazine launched in London in 2011.
