Great Escapes Alps. The Hotel Book
Pleasure on the peaks
Where to sleep in Europe's biggest mountain range.
The Alps are Europe's largest and most imposing mountain range. Formed millions of years ago, they became a travel destination in the late 18th century: first for adventurers and explorers, then for artists and writers, and eventually for anyone wanting to spend the summer outdoors or take up winter sports. Angelika Taschen has followed in their footsteps and gathered together the finest hotels in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France and Italy.
Among them, Kranzbach near Garmisch-Partenkirchen, built for a British aristocrat; the Gasthof Hirschen in the Bregenzerwald, welcoming guests since 1755; and the Seehof near Salzburg, devoted to contemporary art and fine dining. The journey also takes in Schatzalp in Davos, immortalised by Thomas Mann in The Magic Mountain, and characterful guesthouses like Brücke49 in Vals.
Above Chamonix, the Refuge du Montenvers has been housing mountaineers facing the Mer de Glace for more than 140 years. In Megève, the Alps are lived the French way at the L'Alpaga chalet, while South Tyrol brings its own dolce vita with the Ottmangut in Merano, Villa Arnica in Lana and Pension Briol, built in 1928 in the Bauhaus style. Former monasteries, a refuge at the heart of the Dolomites and even a youth hostel set in a protected sanatorium round out the selection.
