The Charterhouse of Seville
La Cartuja de Sevilla-Pickman is a ceramics company specialising in fine earthenware and founded by the British Charles (Carlos) Pickman in the Monastery of La Cartuja in Seville in the 19th century. It currently has its factory in Salteras, province of Seville.
William (Guillermo) Pickman, Charles' brother, settled in Cadiz in 1810, from where he sold foreign pottery and glassware throughout Spain, and years later, Charles was the one who requested the Carthusian monastery of Santa María de las Cuevas in Seville to build the pottery factory there.
The Royal Order of 4 April 1839 granted the building to Charles and the first furnace was put into operation on 1 January 1841. In 1849 the factory already had 22 furnaces and around 500 workers.
Today, La Cartuja de Sevilla produces one of the most iconic and pedigreed tableware products in all of Spain and is always a timeless icon on any table.
