Autumn textiles for the living room: throws, cushions, curtains and rugs

How to dress the living room for the new season and gain warmth without losing Mediterranean light and freshness.

When the evenings start to cool down, the living room calls for a change. There is no need to move furniture or repaint: changing the textiles is enough. A throw on the sofa, cushions with more texture, a rug underfoot and curtains that filter the light completely transform the feel of the room.

In the south, the challenge is a special one: we want warmth, but without losing the light and lightness that make a Mediterranean home unique. In this guide from Pino & Jacaranda we explain how to choose and combine autumn textiles for the living room: which fabrics work, which colours to choose and how to mix them without overdoing it.

1. Think in layers, not changes

The key to dressing the living room in autumn is to think in layers. In summer the living room is pared back to the minimum; in autumn you simply add pieces on top of that light base: first a throw, then cushions with more body, then a rug. That way the change is gradual, easy to undo in spring and never overdone.

Key idea: keep the base of the living room light, with the sofa, walls and curtains in neutral tones, and let the seasonal colour come only through the textiles. That way you can change it every season effortlessly.

2. Throws and blankets: the easiest gesture

A throw is the quickest way to add warmth to the living room. Folded over the arm of the sofa or casually draped over an armchair, it adds texture, colour and, above all, invites you to stay. In autumn, throws in cotton, wool or soft blends of medium weight work best: they keep you warm without being stifling on mild southern evenings.

A stylist's trick: combine two throws in colours from the same family, such as olive green and terracotta, or mustard and ecru. Together they look very considered without seeming forced.

3. Cushions: how to combine them without overdoing it

Cushions are what most change the character of the sofa. In autumn, swap the lighter summer fabrics for others with more body and texture: heavy linen, woven cotton, bouclé or wool. And to combine them successfully, follow a simple formula:

The formula for combining cushions

  • A plain base: in ecru, sand or stone, to tie everything together.
  • A seasonal colour: terracotta, mustard or olive, plain or textured.
  • A subtle pattern: fine stripes, herringbone or a small motif in the same range.
  • Odd numbers: three on a two-seater sofa, five on a large one.
  • Different sizes: 50 × 50 cm at the back, 45 × 45 cm in front and a rectangular one to finish.

The Tex Crudo cushion is a perfect base, and the antique linen covers, made from grain sacks from old European farms, add that handcrafted touch with a story that suits a Mediterranean home so well.

4. Curtains that filter the light

In a southern home, light is sacred even in autumn. So rather than heavy curtains, what works are linen or cotton sheers in light tones: they soften the light, give privacy and add instant warmth without darkening the living room.

How to get curtains right

Floor lengthThey should touch or almost touch the floor. Short curtains make the window look smaller.
1.5-2 timesThe width of the window: that way they hang in generous folds.
15-20 cmAbove the frame: a high rail makes the ceiling look taller.

5. Rugs for autumn

A rug is what adds the most warmth to a living room, because it changes the feel underfoot and dampens sound. In a Mediterranean key, natural fibre rugs such as jute or esparto are the most versatile option: hard wearing, warm and with a texture that goes with everything. If you want something softer, a washable cotton or wool rug is ideal for homes with children or pets.

As for size, the rule is simple: at least the front legs of the sofa and armchairs should rest on the rug. A rug that is too small "floats" in the living room and makes it look smaller. You will find options in our collection of jute and hemp rugs, and the washable Tribu rug, in natural cotton, is a great everyday ally. We tell you more in rugs that transform a home.

6. The colours of the season

The Mediterranean autumn has its own palette: the countryside after summer, damp earth, olive trees and the last leaves. Choose a main colour and repeat it two or three times in the living room, in a cushion, the throw and an object, so everything looks cohesive.

Olive and woodSerene, natural and easy to combine with plants and fibres.
Mustard and sandBright and cheerful, reminiscent of the countryside in autumn.
Chocolate and whiteMore sober and elegant, ideal for very light living rooms.

Frequently asked questions about autumn textiles

Which textiles should go in the living room in autumn?

One or two cotton or wool throws, cushions with more texture than in summer, a natural fibre or wool rug and linen sheers to filter the light. With these four pieces the living room gains warmth without changing any furniture.

How do you combine sofa cushions?

Use the rule of three: a plain base cushion in a neutral tone, another in the seasonal colour and a third with a subtle pattern in the same range. Play with odd numbers and two or three different sizes.

Which colours are in for the living room in autumn?

In a Mediterranean key, terracotta, olive green, mustard and chocolate tones, always on a base of ecru and sand. Choose one as the star and repeat it in two or three textiles.

At Pino & Jacaranda we believe autumn is not something to fight, but to enjoy: with a throw close at hand, light coming in through the sheers and a home ready for long afternoons of conversation and reading.

Because sometimes changing seasons is as simple as changing textures.
