Dining chairs: how to choose them and mix them well

Sizes, materials and comfort to get your table's chairs right, and how to mix them so your dining room has soul.

Choosing the right dining chairs is one of those decisions you notice every single day. After the sofa and the bed, they are the pieces we use most at home: we have breakfast on them, work from home, help the children with homework and linger over Sunday lunch. That is why looks alone are not enough; they need to be comfortable, sit at the right height for the table and stand up to daily use.

In a Mediterranean home, chairs are also what gives the dining room its character. Wood, rattan, rush, rope or linen bring that lived-in warmth we love so much in the south. And with autumn, when we move back indoors and dinners go on longer, it is the perfect time to renew them.

In this guide we go over the measurements worth knowing, the materials that work best, how to gain comfort and how to combine different chairs without losing coherence.

1. The measurements that matter

Before falling in love with a model, get out the tape measure. A standard dining table is around 75 cm high, and the chair seat should be between 44 and 47 cm. What matters is leaving 28-30 cm between the seat and the tabletop: that way your legs fit comfortably and your arms rest at just the right height.

Also check the width of the chair and the table's apron (the rail joining the legs under the top). If the chair has arms, make sure they slide underneath so you can pull it in. And leave room behind: you need at least 70-80 cm between the edge of the table and the wall to push the chair back and stand up easily. If you are unsure about the table, our guide on how to choose a dining table has all the measurements.

Measurements worth remembering

44-47 cmSeat height for a standard 75 cm table.
28-30 cmIdeal gap between seat and tabletop.
60 cmMinimum table width per guest (65-70 cm is better).
70-80 cmClear space behind the chair to stand up comfortably.

2. Materials with a Mediterranean soul

The material defines a chair's character and also how much care it needs. In a Mediterranean dining room, natural fibres and woods work especially well: they age gracefully and add texture.

What each material brings

  • Solid wood: oak, ash, teak or mango. Sturdy, warm and timeless; turned wood recalls traditional village houses.
  • Rattan, wicker and cane: light and fresh, with a summer-house feel. Rattan webbing is making a strong comeback in the dining room.
  • Rush and rope: woven seats are pure Mediterranean and add plenty of texture to a wooden table.
  • Upholstered: in linen, cotton or bouclé, they add comfort. Choose washable fabrics or slipcovers if you have children.

3. Comfort: back, arms and seat

A dining chair has to stand up to long meals. To check, sit as you would at home: your back should rest without feeling bolt upright, and the backrest should reach at least mid-back. A seat with some depth (about 45 cm) and tilted slightly back is a real pleasure during long after-dinner chats.

Chairs with arms are more enveloping, but they take up more space and do not always fit under the table. A classic interior designer's trick is to keep them for the heads of the table and use armless chairs along the sides. And if your chairs are wood or rush, a linen seat cushion makes all the difference in winter.

Key idea: try it with the table. A chair that feels comfortable in the shop may not be if it sits too low or too high for your tabletop; 28-30 cm between seat and table is the golden rule.

4. How to combine chairs and table

The matching dining set, with identical table and chairs, has given way to more personal combinations. Mixing different chairs gives the room a lived-in feel, but there should be a common thread so it does not look haphazard.

Three formulas that work

  • Same model, different finish: identical chairs in two colours or with different upholstery.
  • Statement heads: armchairs or chairs upholstered in an earthy colour at the ends, and simple models along the sides.
  • Bench and chairs: a wooden bench on one side relaxes the look, adds seats and is perfect against a wall.

The trick is to repeat something: the material (all wood and fibres), the colour (sand and honey tones) or the height of the backrest. Our article on the Mediterranean-style dining room has more ideas for dressing the table and the room.

5. How many chairs fit at your table

Allow about 60 cm of tabletop per person and, if you can, go for 65-70 cm to eat in comfort. Round tables are more generous: they have no corners and there is always room for one more. Use this table as a guide:

TableSizeComfortable chairs
RoundØ 90-100 cm4
RoundØ 120-130 cm5-6
Rectangular140-160 cm6
Rectangular180-200 cm8
Rectangular240-270 cm10

If you often host lots of people but are only a few day to day, an extendable table and a couple of stackable or folding chairs tucked away will get you out of trouble.

6. Chairs for the terrace dining area

On the Costa del Sol, the dining room moves out to the porch for much of the year, and autumn is when it is enjoyed most: mild middays and dinners with a blanket close at hand. For outdoors, look for teak, aluminium, synthetic rope or synthetic rattan, materials that withstand sun and humidity without losing their natural look.

Choose stackable chairs if you need to put them away in winter, and add outdoor cushions with removable covers. You will find more ideas in terrace in autumn: how to keep enjoying it.

7. How to care for them so they last

Care by material

  • Wood: a damp, well-wrung cloth; once a year, oil or wax. Avoid direct sun and heat sources.
  • Rattan and fibres: vacuum with a soft brush and, now and then, wipe with a damp cloth. Never leave them soaked.
  • Upholstery: vacuum often and treat stains immediately. A stain protector greatly extends its life.
  • Outdoor: clean teak with water and mild soap, and bring cushions in when it rains.

If your chairs are solid wood, our tips for caring for natural wood furniture give you a complete guide.

Quick checklist

  • 28-30 cm between seat and table.
  • At least 60 cm of table per guest and 70-80 cm clear behind each chair.
  • Wood, rattan, rush or linen for a Mediterranean dining room.
  • Armchairs only if they slide under the table; otherwise keep them for the heads.
  • When mixing models, repeat material, colour or height.
  • For the terrace, teak, aluminium or synthetic rope.

Frequently asked questions

How high should a dining chair be?

For a standard 75 cm table, the seat should be 44-47 cm from the floor, leaving about 28-30 cm between the seat and the tabletop.

Can you mix different chairs in the dining room?

Yes, and it is very much on trend. To make it work, repeat a common element (material, colour or height) or use the same model in different finishes.

Are rattan chairs comfortable for dining?

Very: rattan has some flex and adapts to the body. If you will be sitting for hours, choose models with an upholstered seat or add a cushion.

At Pino & Jacaranda we believe a good chair is one that invites you to stay: to linger at the table, to share dinner without watching the clock and to enjoy your home unhurried.

Because a table is truly enjoyed when everyone around it is comfortable.
