The Charterhouse of Seville
La Cartuja de Sevilla-Pickman is a ceramics company specializing in fine earthenware, founded by the British artist Charles (Carlos) Pickman at the Cartuja Monastery in Seville in the 19th century. It currently has its factory in Salteras, in the province of Seville.
William (Guillermo) Pickman, Carlos's brother, settled in Cádiz in 1810, from where he sold foreign pottery and glassware throughout Spain, and years later, Carlos was the one who requested the Carthusian monastery of Santa María de las Cuevas in Seville to build the pottery factory there.
The Royal Order of April 4, 1839, granted the building to Charles, and the first kiln was put into operation on January 1, 1841. By 1849, the factory already had 22 kilns and around 500 workers.
Today, La Cartuja de Sevilla produces some of the most iconic and prestigious tableware in all of Spain, always a timeless icon on any table.
